Why Is the Sky Blue?

Sunlight contains many colors. When it enters Earth’s atmosphere, small gas molecules scatter shorter blue wavelengths more strongly than longer red wavelengths.

Visible sunlight is a mixture of colors with different wavelengths. Red light has a longer wavelength, while blue and violet light have shorter wavelengths. Human vision is more sensitive to blue than violet, helping explain the color we commonly see in the daytime sky.

Earth’s atmosphere contains mostly nitrogen and oxygen molecules. When sunlight encounters these tiny molecules, shorter wavelengths are redirected in many directions more efficiently than longer wavelengths. Blue light therefore reaches our eyes from across the sky.

Why the sky is not usually violet

Violet wavelengths are scattered even more strongly, but the Sun produces less violet light, human eyes respond less strongly to it, and some violet radiation is absorbed in the upper atmosphere. The combined effect makes the sky appear predominantly blue.

At sunrise and sunset, sunlight travels through a longer path in the atmosphere. Much of the blue light is scattered away before the light reaches an observer, allowing more red, orange, and pink tones to remain visible.

Dust, smoke, pollution, humidity, clouds, and volcanic particles can change how light is scattered and absorbed. These conditions can produce especially vivid colors, but they can also indicate poor air quality when smoke or pollution is involved.
